Fuzzy Android Press is now up and running, at least in beta. FA is being established primarily to publish and promote the books of speculative fiction author D.L. Morrese. Our site will also list books by other new and emerging authors who, in the humble opinion of our fuzzy minions, reflect the kind of upbeat mood we find underrepresented in much of modern science fiction and fantasy, which seems to have turned to the Dark Side.
Not just adults read books. Kids do, too. As the late, great Carl Sagan once said, “The visions we offer our children shape the future.” If our stories are dark, apocalyptic warnings and dire predictions about the fall of mankind, if the likely futures we paint in our fiction are primarily dystopias, then we’re not giving young people much incentive to create a better world, are we? We know kids can be annoying, but they deserve better than this.
On a more personal note, we just don’t find dark, depressing, or shocking tales much fun.
Perhaps we are just a bunch of idealistic optimists, but we think Earth is a pretty nice place. We like it here, and, to be honest, we see humans as a pretty impressive species on the whole. Sure, there are losers, haters, deviants, and people who think pro-wrestling is real, but they are not what mankind is about. People such as these are not the ones who allowed mankind to go from banging rocks together to exploring Mars in just a few thousand years, yet the current ‘shock and awe’ culture of our time tends to focus on them.
We here at Fuzzy Android feel that disastrous events and worse people receive far too much attention, both in real news and in fiction. We think it’s time to tell more stories that star the type of people who really matter, stories that prompt us to smile, stories that remind us that life is good and that we have within us the power to create an even brighter future.
That’s what we’re here to do. We hope to draw attention to a different kind of speculative fiction, one with a more upbeat and, we think, realistic vision of humanity and its future. We’re here to help create a better world, one fictional word at a time.
